Mexico and Spirituality

Earlier today I posted this article about a post from the original Spiritweb, https://newspiritweb.org/the-spiritual-significance-of-changing-your-name/

There’s a whole discussion that could be had around the meaning of your given name, and how it might shape your entire life.

What I noticed from the original post though was that the author experienced this while living in Mexico, and it put in mind of an experience I had while on holiday over there in the Riviera Maya area.

I don’t recall the exact date, but it must be about 20 years ago at least, if not longer.

It remains with me very vividly though.

I have to admit, I was very drunk on tequila throughout this!

The first experience I had was while waiting for my friend to get changed. We had been out for food at the hotel resort, had a few drinks including tequila and had gone back to our room to freshen up – it was a habit, and somewhat still is, to go back after eating to brush our teeth, before going out for more drinks.

I recall being in a semi-drunk state and I was sat on the balcony of our room, waiting for my friend.

It was nightime, pitch black, with stars visible. A gentle to mid breeze was blowing and it still felt hot – essentially a perfect holiday night to my way of thinking.

The time of this was before mobile phones took over the world, I think they were around, and I might even had owned one, but it certainly wasn’t something you were glued to.

I was sat on the balcony, in my happy semi-drunk stupour, just looking out.

The room we had didn’t have a sea view or anything like that, outside the balcony were some palm trees, a perimeter track and probably beyond a security fence.

It was the palm trees that caught my attention though.

The leaves were gently blowing backwards and forwards in the breeze. Occasionally a stronger gust of wind would blow them harder.

Looking back on it now, I think I can understand how, in my mellow mood that night, it would have put me into a meditative mindset.

The strangest thing happened though, while I sat transfixed watching these leaves.

They physically changed form and even though they were still palm tree leaves, they started to take on the form of naked men and women.

The gentle blowing of the leaves back and forth took them into and away from each other, the naked leaf figures were having sex with each other, touching each other, men and women together, men and men, and women and woment together, each being blown to each other, each accepting the other.

Now I accept, this maybe reveals far more about me and my mind than anything else, but I recall this very calm feeling watching it.

It wasn’t about erotica and a cheap thrill, it was about love and acceptance.

Having said that though, all of these leaf / human figures had traditionally slim / perfect figures, make of that what you will.

It’s remained with me though. The strongest thing I can recall about it was this strong feeling of calmness and love. It was normal for me to witness this for some reason.

At that point in my life I didn’t really watch TV or movies etc, that came later, probably in my late 20’s / early 30’s, but I recall many years later watching the Devils Advocate, a scene towards the end where a fresco picture is on the wall with naked plaster characters that come to life and start playing with each other in a similar manner. It’s the closest thing i’ve come to finding something that matches what I saw that night.

I know this was my mind playing tricks and it wasn’t actually the palm leaves coming to life, don’t ring for the doctors just yet!

Later that same holiday, I had another, what I can only call spiritual event.

I had been out drinking, but I didn’t feel very drunk. I will have been though!

My friend had gone back to our room, but I just wasn’t ready to go back, it would have been around 2 or 3 am.

Again, the temperature was warm, slightly breezy and dry.

I would quite often wander down to the beach at night in those days and I found myself wandering down, lying on a sunlounger, and just listening to the waves, looking up at the moonlit sky and the clouds drifting by.

I recall those clouds being the big white fluffy kind, the kind you usually see during the day on a hot sunny day.

Again, I can only think that I entered some kind of very chilled, meditative mindset through watching the clouds. I felt completely relaxed, at peace with everything in the world.

At some point, as I continued to watch the clouds drift by, I recall having this very strong feeling that they weren’t clouds, they were the spirits of dead people that were drifting away from the earth.

I didn’t know where they were going, but I remember music and singing being played.

As I lay there watching the spirits (clouds) leave their Earthly plane, men and women were singing in a foreign language. It was the most peaceful thing I had ever heard and I remember thinking that a group of boys and girls must have come down to the beach, drinking and singing.

I continued to watch the clouds for around 30 minutes or so, accompanied by the music.

As I got up to leave, the singing stopped, and I realised that I was alone on the beach.

Did I just imagine it all that night?

Had a small party come to the beach and then left again?

I honestly don’t know, but I know I was alone on the beach when I left and it was a strong enough experience that it’s remained with me ever since.

I’m not sure what my purpose is in sharing these.

They can be interpreted as spiritual experiences, or a drunken mind on holiday!

I’d be really interested in hearing from anyone with similar experiences though! 🙂
